We will be hitting the ice for charity again at the 5th Annual “Lacing em up for the MDA” – Charity Hockey Game!

Pittsburgh Pharaohs take on the Pittsburgh Metro F.O.O.L.S. in another charity hockey event. The F.O.O.L.S. team walked home with the win in last year’s game but still trail the series 2-1. We have been fortunate enough over these last 4 games to raise about $6,000 for a very reputable charity group, let’s make this 5th year another huge success!

Thanks to all who came to my talk “Data Visualization in HTML5 with jQuery & Wijmo” at Silicon Valley Code Camp.

Session Abstract

HTML5 offers rich new options for data visualization like SVG and Canvas. We will look at the new technology available in HTML5 as well as tools to help use it. Wijmo is a jQuery library that makes charting in SVG easy and work in every browser. We will use it to build some killer dashboards in HTML5. With Wijmo we can create bar charts, line charts and pie charts with just a single line of jQuery. We can use simple html tables to get data from or load in data using Ajax. This session will walk you through from the basics to advanced data visualization in HTML5.

Pharaohs Charity Hockey Game

The Pharaohs are lacing them up for the MDA (Muscular Distrophy Association) for the 4th annual charity hockey game. This year’s game will take place on March 19. We’ll be facing off against the Metro FOOLS once again at the Mount Lebanon Recreation Center. Puck drops at 6:00pm. $7 for adults, $3 for the kids.Come see Banzor on ice for a good cause!

Putting the V in MVC

If you haven’t already heard, Wijmo started as an ASP.NET project. When we wanted to completely rebuild our ASP.NET tools, we looked to jQuery UI as our client-side framework. So now that we have Wijmo, it’s time to show you how to use it in ASP.NET MVC!
Last week I had the pleasure of presenting a session at MVCConf. The session I gave was called “Putting the V in MVC”. Here is the abstract taken from the schedule:

MVC gives us total control over markup in ASP.NET. Or in other words, you better learn how to turn HTML into something pretty. Luckily, there is a great framework to help us out: jQuery UI! We will take a look at using jQuery UI to do exactly that. We will start with simple HTML markup and transform it into interactive widgets with very little code. jQuery UI widgets add style and behavior to otherwise drab markup without changing its semantics. We will also look at Wijmo, a new toolkit that extends jQuery UI. Wijmo brings over 30 widgets to jQuery UI from Menus to SVG Charts, 18 of which are Open Source. Both jQuery UI and Wijmo can take your Views from boring to brilliant in ASP.NET MVC. After this session you will be ready to start putting the V in MVC!

The Ultimate View

The gist of the session was to propose a new way of creating rich UI in MVC (The Ultimate View). The idea is to use simple HTML markup and then enhance it with jQuery UI and Wijmo. Some benefits from this approach are:

Download the sample app to follow along. It is an ASP.NET MVC 3 web app using the Razor View Engine. You will see how simple it is to use Wijmo in MVC and how clean the Views are when doing so.

Pond Hockey in Pittsburgh

This weekend I went out with Pat McGhen and some fellow ice hockey players to play pond hockey at Canonsburg Lake. It was an awesome experience to play outdoors in the snow on a frozen lake.

jQuery Conference Boston

I have been having an amazing time here at jQcon. We have been working our asses off to get Wijmo ready to launch. Today we showed a demo to the jQuery UI team and a couple of the core devs. They seemed to like the project alot and decided to add us into the keynote! I will be showing off all of our hard work on Wijmo tomorrow morning during the keynote and officially announcing the beta program. I might even announce a little something being on github too… Just sayin’

This has been a great show so far and I have met some absolutely brilliant developers here. I am so glad we came to launch Wijmo here and I couldn’t be more proud of our work.

I am logging off to help the team move our website to Media Temple before its too late. Good night and see you at the keynote!
